I am delighted to share that the Center for Engaged Foresight team’s interview on FuturePod is now live!
The Spotlight delved into how randomness, leadership, dominant social psychologies, and disruption shapes our perception and interpretation of changing conditions — and thus our imagination of potential future worlds.
The APF IF Awards was reimagined in 2022 as part of the Association of Professional Futurists celebration of the APF 20th anniversary. The Most Significant Futures Work was re imagined as the APF IF Awards to reflect the globality, diversity, transdisciplinarity of the organization and the futures and foresight field. The Reimagined IF Awards program recognizes the evolving excellence in futures and foresight work with an emphasis on key thematic areas such as impact, imagination, and Indigenous.
Here, me, Nicole Moura and PJ Demdam shared our views about the Dreams and Disruptions Game from a variety context — content, theoretical underpinnings, game evolution, design journey, and impact.
The game “was commended as an innovative and immersive scenario-based card game that could foster stress tested and anti-fragile visions of the future. The game’s structure leverages scenario archetypes, diverse leadership perspectives, planetary disruptions to create a thoughtful and engaging space to allow participants to envision and navigate complex futures. The judges recognized the game’s contribution to both theoretical and practical conversations in the field of futures and foresight, and of course scenarios as well. Now there are lots of games out there, but the game was quite novel in how it encouraged disruptive thinking, and that was really appreciated by the judges.”
By introducing disruption and challenging our preferred visions of the future, we can make them more antifragile. Being unprepared for scenarios we haven’t anticipated can lead to chaotic realities that prevent us from achieving our desired futures. However, when we simulate scenarios through games, incorporating the fun element of gamification, it becomes an opportunity to learn more about the future and foresight thinking. It also allows us to challenge ourselves, allow emergence to enter through us and build resilience in facing future situations.
Thanks to the Assocation of Professional Futurists and the FuturePod team for the Spotlight!
